You closed the biggest deal of your life. And you felt nothing.
Your partner looks at you like she is grieving someone who is still alive.
Your children stopped asking you to play.
The questions start at 3 AM and do not stop.
And there is no one you can say this to without it costing you something.
This is not a breakdown.
It is a passage.
Not burnout. Not depression. Not a phase you wait out. What you are inside has an Architecture — and it has a name.
The Descent is the crossing between the first half of life and the second. The first half is built by the Mask: the identity that earned, performed, and won. The second begins when that structure stops holding.
Everything that built the first half is useless here. More discipline. A better system. Another push. Those are the tools of the first half, and they cannot carry you across.
Nothing has gone wrong. Something has ended.

This book will not comfort you.
There is no morning routine in it. No breathing technique. No five steps to clarity by Friday. It will not tell you that everything happens for a reason.
It gives you one thing: a map of what is happening to you.
If that is not what you came for, close this page.
About the Author

Andreas Hofmann did not study the darkness from a safe distance. He lived inside it for twenty-five years.
For more than a decade of that time he walked beside others still inside their own depths. Never from the far bank. In the water the whole time.
This book was written from the far side of his own crossing.
